Very low magnification light micrograph of a section through a human pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes into the intestine from closely packed acini. Pancreatic secretions neutralise the acidic contents coming from the stomach as they pass into the small intestine (duodenum). Scattered on the violet background corresponding to the exocrine pancreatic acini. The clearer rounded areas correspond to the islets of Langerhans. Islets of Langerhans secrete insulin and glucagon into the blood to regulate blood sugar levels. | |
