Victorian houses on Howard street lean dangerously to the side in this hand-coloured contemporary photograph. The earthquake broke foundations, cracked walls, and compromised the structure of hundreds, if not thousands, of homes all over San Francisco. Fires raged for days after the quake. Around 30, 000 buildings were destroyed and more than 3000 people died in this disaster. There was over 400 million US dollars (in 1906 dollars) in damage. | |
