Neutralization reaction. Gloved hand pours hydrochloric acid (HCl) into a beaker containing ammonia (NH4OH). A neutralization reaction occurs: HCl + NH4OH -> H2O + NH4Cl. Both solutions have equal volume and the same molar concentration of 0.1 M. Methyl red indicator has been added to the ammonia solution. Initially, basic ammonia remains yellow because the acid is neutralized but the base is in excess. As more acid is added red swirls become more prominent. Finally, when all acid is added, the whole solution becomes red, indicating a completed neutralization reaction. | |
