Iron sulphide precipitate. When sodium sulphide (Na2S) solution is added to iron(II) ammonium sulphate (Fe(NH4)2(SO4)2) solution, a black iron(II) sulphide (FeS) precipitate forms. Both solutions are 0.25 M concentration. This is a double displacement reaction: Fe2+ + S2- -> FeS. This reaction can be used to test for iron contamination in water systems. | |
