Boil on wrist. Also called an abscess, a boil is a localized skin infection that typically starts as a reddened, tender area. It becomes firm and hard, while the centre softens and becomes filled with pus that consists of white blood cells, bacteria, and proteins. The boil can be surgically opened or it may spontaneously drain out through the surface of the skin. There are many causes of boils. Some are caused by an ingrown hair, or a splinter or other foreign material. Some boils, as in acne, are caused by plugged sweat glands that have become infected. | |
