Beta-Amyloid (yellow protein) shown within an amyloid precursor protein. Enzymes cut the APP molecule into segments so that the beta-amyloid protein is isolated (see yellow and green separation at cleavage site). Many beta-amyloid molecules then accumulate to create beta-amyloid plaques. Plaques form around nerve cells in the hippocampus, causing nerve cell death and negatively effecting memory, cognition, and decision-making skills. This process may be a significant cause or symptom of Alzheimer's disease. | |
