Part of the cerebrum is sectioned sagittally to highlight the amygdala (green), hypothalamus (blue-green), hippocampus (red), and entorhinal cortex (blue). These four structures make up part of the limbic system, which plays a significant part in the body's emotion, motivated behaviour, and memory. The amygdala contains nervous tissue that recognizes and recollects emotions, such as fear or sadness. The hypothalamus helps to control behaviours such as sexuality and hunger. The hippocampus is responsible for memory creation and storage as well as spatial navigation. The entorhinal cortex also has a main role in memory development and spatial navigation, however this structure will be affected first by Alzheimer's disease. The caudate and lentiform nuclei (peach) and cerebellum (gold) are also revealed. | |
