Charles Galton Darwin (1887-1962), British physicist. After graduating from the University of Cambridge in mathematics in 1910, Darwin took a post-graduate position under Ernest Rutherford at Manchester University, working alongside Niels Bohr. At Manchester he also worked on X-ray diffraction by crystals. During World War I he worked on sound ranging and aircraft noise. After the war he worked on electromagnetic theory and quantum and statistical mechanics, before becoming Director of the National Physical Laboratory in 1938. During the Second World War he worked on the Manhattan Project, coordinating US, British and Canadian efforts. He was the grandson of Charles Darwin. Photographed at the California Institute of Technology, USA, in 1923.
