Raymond Thayer Birge (1887-1980). Birge spent most of his career in the physics department of the University of California, Berkeley, and was its chairman from 1932 until his retirement in 1955. His early work was in molecular spectroscopy, which led to the development of the Birge-Sponer method to determined the dissociation energy of a molecule from spectroscopic data. He is best known for his work finding best values for the fundamental physical constants. | |
