Louis Agassiz, zoologist and geologist, and Benjamin Peirce, mathematician and astronomer, conferring in 1871. Agassiz was an innovator in the study of the natural history of the Earth, while Peirce made contributions to the fields of algebra, the mathematics of astronomy, the philosophy of mathematics, and algebra.
