Hiram Bingham III (1875-1956), American explorer and politician. Bingham is best known for his discovery of the Inca city of Machu Picchu in 1911, while on the Yale Peruvian Expedition of that year. He was involved in aviation during World War I, serving in the aviation section of the US Army and commanded a flying school in France. After the war, he entered politics and became a Senator in 1924. He was later dubbed he Flying Senator"", for his continuing connections with aviation. He left the Senate in 1933.
