Herring gulls ~Larus argentatus~ sometimes ride the Channel ferries. They are very successful opportunists that have made themselves unpopular. A seabird that now lives inland in many places in the UK often foraging on city dumps and on waterways where people drop food. A bold bird, it will raid picnics and has been known to attack and eat small pets. As a natural cliff dweller it can find suitable sites on buildings so it may never visit the coast. On the deck of a ferry it may be fed or can pick up discarded food. | |
