Light micrograph of gallbladder epithelium. The luminal surface of the gallbladder is lined by a simple columnar epithelium. The epithelial cells are especially tall and have an ovoid nucleus located in the basal third and all of them at the same height, forming a neat row along the epithelium. Gold-coloured pigment grains are often seen in the apical cytoplasm. The luminal surface shows a small projection that corresponds to an aggregate of microvilli. Below the epithelium is the connective tissue of the lamina propria. | |
