Fritz Haber (1912-1998), German-American aerospace engineer. Haber received his PhD in technical engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. During World War II he worked for Junkers Aircraft in Dessau, Germany, where he designed a "piggyback" system for carrying a missile on top of another aircraft. After the war Haber was recruited into the US space program by Operation Overcast, and his "piggyback" system was used to transport the space shuttle between landing and launch sites. He also developed parabolic flight, where an aircraft flies up and down at 45 degrees angles, simulating gravity-free conditions at the top of the arc. | |
