Illustration of the Venera 7 probe approaching the surface of Venus. This probe was launched by the USSR on 17th August 1970 and entered the Venusian atmosphere on 15th December 1970. Venera 7 was the first spacecraft to return data to Earth after landing on another planet. It was able to do this even though its parachute failed during entry and the probe entered freefall, crashing into the planet. It returned data on the temperature (475 degrees Celsius) and pressure (92 bar) on the Venusian surface. | |
