Goddard Earth Observing System (GOES) model of global air temperatures at 2 metres on 6th June 2021. On this day the UAE recorded its highest temperature on record for June at 51.8 degrees Celsius. At least three other Middle Eastern countries also experienced temperatures of more than 50 degrees Celsius. These extreme temperatures were caused by a 'heat dome', which occurs when high pressure traps hot air as it rises, pushing it back to the surface, causing even more warming. Areas of Central and South Asia also experienced higher than normal temperatures for the time of year. | |
