Soap bubble chain. Soap bubble structures want to achieve an optimal order and state of equilibrium by limiting their surface area using the least amount of energy. Their relationship with minimal surfaces makes them valuable tools in research. Bubble clusters obey Plateau's Laws, a set of geometric rules relating to their appearance and structure. It's well documented ordered structures of equally-sized bubbles can be created in the confinement of a cylindrical glass tube. Photographer Kym Cox discovered equally-sized bubbles will spontaneously create the same structures, known as chains, without confinement. This further establishes the use of soap bubbles as an experimentally accessible model system for examining the geometry of cellular structures and is a useful tool for understanding the man-made and natural sciences of packing.
