Piece of damp red litmus paper turning blue at mouth of test tube of ammonia. Red litmus paper reacts with an alkali by turning blue when held over the mouth of a test tube of liquid ammonia. If the paper is dampened with water it will react with the vapor of an alkali like ammonia, which is highly volatile, as the gas dissolves into it. Ammonia has a very strong odour. | |
