In an outdoor enclosure in Europe the persistant cold is combatted by an infrared heat lamp. The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) while used to sub zero temperatures in their native Southern Africa, cannot cope with the combination of humidity and cold. Many exotic species as well as poultry and young farm animals are kept healthy with an incandescent lamp that produces energy in the red and infrared spectrum. We experience the invisible infrared wavelengths as heat but, unlike mammals, animals, like some snakes, insects and fish, can see in infrared with their eyes or a specially adapted organ. Goldfish are the only known animal that can see both in infrared and ultraviolet. | |
