Light micrograph through human kidney tissue showing evidence of mercuric chloride damage of the kidneys. Mercuric chloride, formally known as corrosive sublimate, is a chemical compound of mercury and chlorine with the formula HgCl2. Historically, it was used as a treatment for syphilis, but was withdrawn because of its mercury toxicity. It was found that mercuric chloride tends to accumulate in the kidneys causing severe corrosive damage which ultimately lead to kidney failure. | |
