Composite image of the Perseus galaxy cluster. The image combines X-ray and optical light observations taken by ESA's XMM-Newtonâ??s European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) and the Digitzed Sky Survey II, respectively. The diffuse coloured regions represent hot gas at different temperatures which changes with radius, with cooler regions towards the centre. The blue and red arrows indicate the motion of gas in the region, relative to the cluster itself. Blue arrows represent gas moving towards the observer and red represents gas moving away. The length of the arrows indicate the size of the velocity: the longer the arrow tail, the faster the gas is moving. The Perseus cluster contains thousands of galaxies and is one of the most massive objects in the known universe. | |
