Composite image of the aftermath of a black hole eruption. This eruption occurred in the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster containing thousands of galaxies, hot gas and dark matter which is about 390 million light years from Earth. Hot gas is emitting X-rays (pink), which were detected by ESA's XMM-Newton space observatory. Gas emitting radio waves (blue) was detected by the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and gas emitting at infrared wavelengths (white) was detected by the 2MASS survey. Bright dots show the distribution of foreground stars and galaxies. The gas is heated by powerful jets of matter and energy released by the supermassive black hole that sits at the core of the clusterâ??s central galaxy. The X-ray emission reveals the edge of a large cavity which is filled with radio emission from electrons accelerated to almost the speed of light, evidence of a powerful eruption from the blackhole. | |
