Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of gas hydrate crystals in a sediment sample. Gas hydrate crystals are made of gas molecules trapped within a cage of frozen water molecules. Most natural gas hydrates contain methane or sometimes ethane, carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide. Global warming could cause the destabilization of gas hydrates, releasing methane gas into the atmosphere. This greenhouse gas contributes to climate change. | |
