PIXL (planetary instrument for x-ray lithochemistry), an X-ray fluorescence instrument, aboard NASA's Perseverance rover, has a nightlight (purple) enabling it to take pictures of rock targets in the dark. PIXL's nightlight will allow it to analyse fine-scale chemical variation in Martian rock and soil during the night. The Perseverance rover is part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, that will study the geology of Mars and search for signs of life. It launched on 30th July 2020 and is scheduled to arrive on 18th February 2021. | |
