Saturn (white dot, top) and Jupiter (brighter white dot, below), in a planetary conjunction. A planetary conjunction is when two planets are seen close together in the sky when viewed from Earth. Here the two largest planets in the solar system are close together in the night sky. On 21st December 2020, the planets reached their closest alignment, a tenth of a degree apart. The last 'Great Conjunction' of Saturn and Jupiter this close together occurred over 800 years ago. Photographed in Shenandoah National Park, Luray, Virginia, USA, on 13th December, 2020. |
