Cape fox (Vulpes chama) kit playing with a dead Pygmy hairy-footed gerbil, which its parents would have caught during the night. In playing with the dead prey and imitating the hunting of prey, the kits develop their strength and agility and hone their hunting skills. The adults, which hunt at night, allow the kits to play at dusk and dawn. This small fox, measuring up to 60 centimetres, inhabits the grasslands and savannahs of southern Africa. It is mostly nocturnal and as adults they live alone or in pairs in dens. It feeds on small rodents, rabbits, reptiles, insects and a little plant matter.
