Electrostatic precipitator, illustration. Smoke from burning fossil fuels in power stations contains particles which can damage buildings and cause breathing problems. Electrostatic precipitators are used in chimneys to remove the particles. The particles pick up charge as they pass the charged metal wires (red). The charged particles are attracted to oppositely charged collecting plates (blue), which are knocked to remove the residue, which falls into a collector. | |
