Tides, illustration. Tides, the rise and fall of sea levels, are caused by the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun and the rotation of the Earth. The moon is the largest influence on the Earth's tides. Ocean levels fluctuate daily as the earth rotates (red arrow), as the moon travels around the earth, and as they, together, travel around the sun. The combined gravitational forces cause the seas to rise and fall, producing two tides each day. | |
