Double glazing. Illustration of a section through a window with insulated glazing, commonly known as double glazing. A double glazed window consists of two glass panes separated by a vacuum or space filled with air, or an inert gas such as argon. A vacuum, air and argon are poor conductors of heat, and form an insulating layer. However, radiant energy from the sun can pass through the window, warming the air in the room. The inside of the inner pane of glass may also have a coating which reflects radiant heat back into the room (orange arrow). Significantly less heat is lost through double glazing than through a single-glazed window. | |
