Marian Anderson (1897-1993), US opera singer, performing at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC, USA. This performance was a response to Anderson being barred from performing in Washington DC's Constitution Hall because she was black. Eleanor Roosevelt, the First Lady at the time, helped to organise the Lincoln Memorial performance, which took place in front of an integrated crowd of more than 750, 000.
