Vinegaroons, or whip scorpions (Mastigoproctus giganteus) performing a courtship ritual on a tree trunk after heavy rain. This arachnid is known as a vinegaroon because of its ability to emit a spray containing acetic acid through its tail as a defence mechanism, which produces a vinegar-like smell. Photographed in the Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. | |
