Coloured scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of a quantum corral. This structure is formed from 48 iron atoms (with red peaks) arranged on a copper surface. It is called a corral as the iron atoms form a barrier that traps copper electrons. The concentric wave patterns inside the structure are formed by the confined copper electrons. The structure was formed using the fine tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope to position individual atoms. The radius of the corral is approximately 7 nanometres. | |
