OSIRIS-REx (Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer) asteroid mission. Illustration of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft's Touch-And-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM) sample return system (round, grey, centre) being stowed after collecting a sample from the surface of asteroid 101955 Bennu. This sample-return mission, part of the NASA New Frontiers programme, is being carried out by NASA and the University of Arizona. The spacecraft launched on 8 September 2016, arriving at the asteroid in December 2018. On 20th October 2020 the TAGSEM successfully collected a sample from Bennu's surface. The sample is scheduled to be returned to Earth in September 2023. | |
