Ice melts in oil, 2 of 2. Several ice cubes (with some food coloring frozen in) are placed in a beaker with Canola oil. Because ice has lower density compared to oil, the cubes float. Ice immediately starts to melt and since water has higher density than oil, melted water sinks through the oil (Photo 1). When all ice is melted, a layer of blue colored water is situated under the oil at the bottom of the beaker (Photo 2). | |
