After being dipped in the solution, the paper remains white, if there are no sulfide ions in the solution (negative test, Photo 1). When sulfide ions are present in the solution, a reaction with lead ions Pb2+ occurs, resulting in dark brown to black insoluble lead sulfide: Pb2+ + S2- -> PbS (positive test, Photo 2). | |
