This heteropod is a mollusk and is distantly related to clams and squid. In fact, Carinaria lamarcki is a free swimming marine snail with a small shell. The shell contains and protects most of its digestive tract, the gonads, the heart, and the gills. It is predatory and consumed a number of organisms that it was trawled with while in the lab. This individual was trawled up in the Gulf of Mexico, 2019. Image courtesy of the Journey into Midnight project, NOAA/OER. | |
