The Payara (Hydrolycus scomberoides), is also variously known as wolf fish, vampire fish, Dogtooth Tetra, etc., is called Chambira in the Peruvian Amazon. The teeth, which are hollow and over-sized, fit into chambers so the mouth can be closed. Used for grasping other fish, the long teeth break frequently but they are quickly replaced. Payaras are prodigious jumpers and are capable of consuming large fish. This individual was photographed in Iquitos, Peru, 2018. | |
