Several of the giant catfishes or goliath catfishes inhabit the Orinoco and Amazon Basins. One of the goliath catfishes found in the Amazon River goes by Sant??n in Peru, Pira??ba in Brasil, and Lechero in Colombia (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum). The species has been documented to reach lengths of 12 feet (3.7 meters). It feeds on small fishes and invertebrates. The species migrates for breeding from drainage systems of the Amazon to the upper headwaters in the Peruvian Amazon. Few to no regulations limit the take on the migrating fishes and the fisher is heavily overharvested in Peru. Juveniles have the long streamers on their fins depicted here. This juvenile was photographed in Amazonian Peru in 2018. | |
