Male Scarlet Shiners (Lythrurus fasciolaris) fighting for access to females. The females were depositing eggs in a gravel bed. Males use tubercles on their heads to ram one another and try to dominate rivals. The winner of these battles gets to swim in and fertilize eggs produced by females giving him a better chance to pass on his genes. Photographed in-situ in Allen County, Kentucky, USA, 2019. | |
