Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of mylonitic peridotite from Ronda (Spain). The Ronda massif is the largest subaerial exposure of mantle rocks on Earth. Peridotite, mainly made of the mineral olivine, is the main constituent of the Earth's mantle. In order to be transported to the surface from depths of about 100 km, this peridotite underwent high degrees of strain, with the formation of particular rocks called mylonites. Polarized light, crossed polarizers and red tint lambda plate. The rock slice (thin section) is 30-micron-thick. Zeiss Axioscop 40pol. Width of view: 2.7 mm.
