Karlsbad Sprudelstein is a rare sedimentary rock with oolites made of aragonite. It is found in the Czech Republic (at Karlovy Vary), and is just fantastic under the microscope. Here we see these ooids made of concentric thin shells that grew on one another, like encrustations of limescale. (Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). Sample provided by Axel Munnecke. Polarized light photomicrograph of a thin section of rock. Polarized light, crossed polarizers and red tint (lambda) plate. The rock slice (thin section) is 30-micron-thick. Width of view: 1.3 mm | |
