The Yellow-spotted River Turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) once existed in tremendous numbers throughout the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. Massive hunting pressure, both as a source of meat but particularly for its eggs, and subsequent pet-trade pressures, have reduced the numbers to the point that the species is now protected globally. Despite successful head-starting programs within its range, traffic in so-called legal specimens, especially serving the Asian markets, has increased. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, January 2019. | |
