Smooth muscle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through smooth muscle. The muscle fibres are surrounded by connective tissue (yellow). Within each fibril are contractile units called sarcomeres. A sarcomere has protein filaments of myosin and actin (purple) that slide over each other, thereby causing the whole muscle to contract. Large numbers or orange mitochondria are present. Smooth muscle is found in places like the digestive system and in blood vessels. It is not under voluntary control, instead being controlled by the autonomic nervous system and hormones. It produces slow, long-term contractions.Magnification: x12000 at 10 cm wide | |
