Mosaic of the Osprey sample collection site on the surface of the Bennu asteroid, Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) image. Osprey, the backup sample collection site for the mission, is in the crater at bottom right, just above its central dark patch. The light boulder to the left of the crater's centre is Strix Saxum, which measures 5.2 metres in length. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched in 2016 and arrived at the asteroid 101955 Bennu in December 2018. As well as obtaining samples for return to Earth in 2023, it is studying the asteroid. Images obtained by the PolyCam instrument at a distance of 250 metres form Bennu's surface on the 26th May 2020. | |
