Mosaic of the entire surface of the Bennu asteroid with the first 12 named surface features labelled, Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) image. Each pixel covers 5 centimetres of the surface, and, at the time of publication, is the highest resolution global map of a planetary body. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched in 2016 and arrived at the asteroid 101955 Bennu in December 2018. As well as obtaining samples for return to Earth in 2023, it is studying the asteroid. Images obtained by the PolyCam instrument from distances ranging from 3.1 to 5 kilometres above the asteroid surface between the 7th March and 19th April 2019. | |
