Eyes of a seventy-five year old man after osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), or tooth in eye, surgery of the left eye. This operation is a last resort to restore sight to patients with severe types of corneal blindness that cannot be treated with a conventional corneal transplant. The procedure involves taking a patient's tooth, fitting a lens in it and then implanting the tooth in the patient's eye. The front of the eye is removed and replaced with a skin graft from the patient's cheek. The lens allows light to reach the retina, restoring sight. | |
