Bas relief showing the seizure of Briseis from Achilles. In Homer's Iliad Achilles took Briseis as a war prize and later intended to make her his bride. When Agamenmnon, leader of the Achean Greeks at Troy, lost his concubine Chryses he seized Briseis as a replacement, the cause of great emnity between Achilles and Agamemnon. On the relief Briseis is being lead away by 2 heralds sent by Agamemnon leaving Achilles, on the left with his head turned away, grief stricken at his loss. Achilles' friend Patroclus stands with a spear and arm outstretched comforting Briseis. Marble Roman relief c.30 BC - AD 80. British Museum | |
