Diprotodon opatum. Computer illustration and photo-reconstruction of the giant wombat Diprotodon opatum. The largest marsupial among the Australian megafauna, it was the size of a rhinoceros, and its teeth resembled those of a rabbit. Diprotodon has existed from about 1.6 million years ago until extinction some 46.000 years ago through most of the Pleistocene epoch. Its closest modern-day relatives are wombat and koala. Its name in Latin means two forward teeth. | |
