Tubeless telescope described by Huygens, 17th century. At top are the eyepiece and objective mounts and connecting string. This telescope was described by Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) in his 'Astroscopia Compendiaria' (1684). It was referred to as a tubeless aerial telescope. An aerial telescope is a refracting telescope with a very long focal length that does not use a tube. This one is 65 metres long. Illustration published in 'Astroscopia Compendiaria' (1684). | |
