Kitt Peak National Observatory telescopes, aerial photograph. Located at Kitt Peak in Arizona, USA, this site has 23 telescopes and is the largest collection of astronomical instruments in the world. Most of them are part of the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). This view includes the McMath-Pierce solar telescope (triangular structure in foreground), opened in 1962 and operated by the National Solar Observatory. The first telescopes were built here in 1960. At far left is the WIYN 3.5-metre telescope, with the Mayall 4-metre telescope at far right. The tower at lower centre is the former home of the Vacuum Tower Telescope, and now houses the Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) experiment. Photographed in June 2003. | |
